A New Medium

“A new medium is never an addition to an old one, nor does it leave the old one in peace. It never ceases to oppress the older media until it finds new shapes and positions for them.”

-Marshall McLuhan

The name for my blog came from this quote by a Canadian scholar who died over three decades ago.

However long ago the words were spoken, they still ring true today. The digital medium is an addition to the traditional media, but it only functions alongside print and television as long as they move aside in some ways to make space for digital.

That is, video used to exist only on television. Print advertisements used to require paper for distribution. Now, many “television” programs are viewed primarily online. Banner ads target consumers even more directly than niche magazines.

The landscape is changing, and we have to adapt.
